Know the art of love, Understand Vatsayana Kamasutra


Kamasutra or aphorisms of want is a collection of 1250 verses which abridge the huge volume of work produced by sage Babhravpanchal. Maharshi Vatsayan was entrusted with the task of condensing the extensive work compiled in a treatise named Kama Shastra by sage Babhravpanchal. The Kamasutra is not an exclusive book on maximising sexual delights but this was recognised as one of the essential components in the work.

Objectives of individual life

There are four objectives for the occurrence of human beings, Dharma (spiritual discipline), Arth (way of livelihood and creation of conveniences), Kama (needs which include carnal delights), and Moksha (ultimate salvation). Many men and women try to have the first three in their own lives while the fourth is more or less not strived for. Thus, the first three are the most basic goals of every individual’s life. Rishi Vatsayan emphasises the importance of shastra learning for attainment of them.

Why is kama shastra necessary?

Despite being enthusiastic, full of faith and being able, human being often don’t reach their desired aim, because they don’t have the right advice. Since carnal desire is one of the key objects of life, it is important that a well organised discourse that stipulates disciplined activities is stuck to.

A man and woman tying the nuptial knot ought to be trained in obtaining carnal delights, since it’s the basic purpose of marriage. This is where the significance of having a Kama shastra or scripture on gender becomes evident. Union of male and female forces was not taken for granted at early times. The Vedas imply that there should be training in Kama shastra.

In ancient times, such training was portion of Gurukula education system, but just when all other areas are exhausted on the offenders. When the inmates were about to go into married life, after going through rigorous discipline of celibacy, the art of love has been introduced into them. Vedas, Vedangas and other scriptures were educated first that made the disciples accomplished in social conduct and personal areas. The analysis of Kama shastra was that the last portion of their education and was forbidden for them earlier.
